I’d like to read the User Guide before downloading MacFamilyTree

Our User Guide is available in English and German. For our French and Dutch customers, we prepared a Quick Start Guide. Please click one of the following links:

I want to try MacFamilyTree before buying, what do I do?

Please use the download link above. You cannot save or export your entries using the demo version. Except that, it's fully functional. If you purchase MacFamilyTree from our distribution partners, you'll receive an e-mail containing a serial number. Once you enter that number in MacFamilyTree's registration dialogue, the limitation will be removed.

If you purchase the full version on the App Store after you tried out the application in demo mode, you must first delete the version downloaded from our website, as the App Store version has another licensing model which does not require to enter a serial number.

I downloaded MacFamilyTree but can't install it properly

Double-click the installer file after the download has finished. This installation window will open. Drag and drop MacFamilyTree in your Applications folder in any case. This is mandatory for MacFamilyTree to work properly. If instead you open the installer file every time and launch MacFamilyTree from there, you might encounter problems during operation that donʼt occur when properly installed.

Is MacFamilyTree compatible to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion?

Yes, MacFamilyTree is fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later. Attention: Mac OS X 10.4 and PowerPC-based Macs are no longer supported.

I like MacFamilyTree, what are my purchasing options?

MacFamilyTree is either available on the Mac App Store or as download from our online store (Please click the 'Buy Now' button above to access our online store.) Payment options are:

  • Cedit Cards
  • PayPal

I want to switch to MacFamilyTree from FamilyTreeMaker, Legacy, RootsMagic etc. How can I transfer my information?

You need to export your tree file from your previous application as a GEDCOM file. These files can be imported from the start screen or the file menu in MacFamilyTree.

Do you offer a Windows Version of MacFamilyTree?

No, MacFamilyTree does only run on Macs and we do not offer a Windows Version. You can exchange data with Windows users through the export of GEDOM files.

MacFamilyTree is updated very regularly. Which updates are free and which are not?

Updates like version 6.1 and 6.5 are always free for buyers of version 6, we're only charging for very major updates roughly every 3 years, minor updates are always free of charge. If you've bought version 6.0 for example, you can update to the most recent version 6.1 at no additional cost.
We're adding many new features and improvements on a regular basis for version 6 free of charge. Updates from all previous versions like version 3 or 4 or 5 cost $25.

I currently do not want to update to version 6, where can I download Version 5?

You can download Version 5 here: Download

Is there an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch version?

Yes. Please have a look at our products page for MobileFamilyTree. MobileFamilyTree requires a fully licensed copy of MacFamilyTree 5.6.4 or higher.

I have a second Mac and I want to use MacFamilyTree on my two Macs. Do I need a second copy?

No. If you own two Macs, feel free to use the same license on both of your Macs.

Do you offer a manual?

Yes. The manual is accessible in the help menu in MacFamilyTree or on the start screen.

I launched MacFamilyTree - I still need help

Best have a look at MacFamilyTree's User Guide first. You'll find it in MacFamilyTree's Help menu. If the User Guide doesn't cover your question, please click Support in the left-hand navigation and have a look at the FAQ section. Simply enter a search word or click one of the links in the list of most frequently viewed topics. If you don't find an answer there, either, there's an index of all available help topics. You'll even find tutorial videos in that Support section:

If these don't answer your question, either, simply use the contact form in our website's Support section. Please understand that it may take several days before we get to reply to your mail. We constantly try to improve both the user guide as well as the questions and answers so at some point you won't have to wait at all because the information you need is readily available.
