Frequently asked questions about MacFamilyTree 7
• Can I run MacFamilyTree 9 on macOS 10.15 Catalina?
Show Answer
Yes, MacFamilyTree 9 is fully compatible with Apple’s latest macOS.
• Why do I have to pay for updates?
Show Answer
Paid upgrades of MacFamilyTree and MobileFamilyTree are released about every three years. Within these three years, we are offering lots of huge, free updates (like 9.1, 9.2, 9.5…) without charging you again and without asking for any subscription fees. If you compare our pricing to all genealogy competitors, Mac and Windows, you’ll find out, that MacFamilyTree is not only more affordable than similar software but also offering a lot more for the money. To provide quality at the level you know and you deserve, we have to charge you for updates every few years. The former version won’t stop working of course and we don’t close any service or deactivate any features of MacFamilyTree 9. Therefore you do not have to purchase the MacFamilyTree 9 upgrade if you don’t want to use the new version.
If you wonder why upgrades are priced the same for new customers as well as customers of a previous version: unfortunately Apple does now allow to charge different prices for the same application. Therefore it’s always the same cost for everyone. Since MacFamilyTree’s full price is less than our competitor’s upgrade pricing, we hope that you still feel the upgrade is worth the price.
Synium makes money by developing and selling high quality software which has been awarded by Apple multiple times. That’s our only business model – no subscription fees, no interest in selling customer data, no need to sell advertisements. Please support the development of high quality Mac software.
• I bought MacFamilyTree 9 - why do I have to purchase MobileFamilyTree 9, too?
Show Answer
MacFamilyTree and MobileFamilyTree are two separate apps. While they work perfectly as a team, both apps are able to function without the iOS or Mac companion. If you use a Mac but no iPhone/iPad, you don’t require MobileFamilyTree. If you just want to pursue you family research on iPhone or iPad, you don’t require MacFamilyTree.
iOS apps always have to be purchased separately and Apple offers no way to buy a Mac and iOS app bundle at the same time. This is way you have to buy MobileFamilyTree separately. If you opt for MobileFamilyTree 9, you get a version that works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch – one purchase, three platforms.
• How can I import a family tree created with a different app?
Show Answer
Every modern genealogy app offers GEDCOM import and export. GEDCOM is a universal genealogical file format which allows you to exchange your data easily. If you want to import a tree created with a different app, export it as a GEDCOM file then import that file with MacFamilyTree.
• How can I open my MacFamilyTree 8 tree in version 9?
Show Answer
MacFamilyTree 9 will automatically show all your trees in the start window. If you open one of these trees, MacFamilyTree converts it to the new version 9 file format. In case you cannot find you trees in MacFamilyTree 9’s start window, please open the old MacFamilyTree version again and export your tree to your hard drive (file menu, export as MacFamilyTree file). If you open this file with version 9, all your data is available and you can enjoy all of MacFamilyTree 9’s new features.
