MacFamilyTree 11 requires a Mac (M- or Intel-based) running macOS 12 Monterey or later; we recommend using macOS 15 Sequoia.

MacFamilyTree 11 and MobileFamilyTree 11 deliver a plethora of improvements and new features. Every three years, we release a new paid update to our software. In between, we provide you with a rich set of entirely free updates and new features – an update model unique to all genealogy apps on Mac or even on Windows.

We earn our money solely through the sale of high-quality applications – and not via subscriptions or by selling user data. By purchasing the most recent update, you are helping to ensure that we can continue to permanently improve and further develop MacFamilyTree – and in return you always will get the most modern and innovative genealogy app on the market.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible for us to sell the software on the App Store at a lower price for owners of the previous version. Apple dictates that software prices have to be the same for everyone on the platform.

MacFamilyTree and MobileFamilyTree are two separate apps. While they work perfectly as a team, both apps are able to function without the iOS or Mac companion. If you use a Mac but no iPhone/iPad, you don’t require MobileFamilyTree. If you just want to pursue you family research on iPhone or iPad, you don’t require MacFamilyTree. iOS apps always have to be purchased separately and Apple offers no way to buy a Mac and iOS app bundle at the same time. This is why you have to buy MobileFamilyTree separately. If you opt for MobileFamilyTree 10, you get a version that works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch – one purchase, three platforms.

Every modern genealogy app offers GEDCOM import and export. GEDCOM is a universal genealogical file format which allows you to exchange your data easily. If you want to import a tree created with a different app, export it as a GEDCOM file then import that file with MacFamilyTree.

MacFamilyTree 11 will automatically show all your trees in the start window. If you open one of these trees, MacFamilyTree converts it to the new version 11 file format. In case you cannot find your trees in MacFamilyTree 11’s start window, please open the old version of MacFamilyTree again and export your missing tree to your hard drive (file menu, export as MacFamilyTree file). When you open this file with version 11, all your data is available and you can enjoy all of MacFamilyTree 11’s new features.

If you cannot remember your password, please open MacFamilyTree, then navigate to the publish section. Select Export Website for MacFamilyTree.com, click in log in, then click on “forgot password”.

MacFamilyTree 11 and CloudTree allow you to share trees of unlimited size with other users. In order to achieve this, some significant changes to the underlying architecture had to be made. Unfortunately it’s not possible to share a tree between MacFamilyTree 11 and MacFamilyTree 10 or earlier. All participants need to run MacFamilyTree 11 or MobileFamilyTree 11.

Such a duplication can exist for several reasons: 1) Duplicate and/or empty entries on the “Edit” -> “Families” tab In most cases, they are responsible for the appearance of such duplicates or “ghost characters”. Delete these entries and the problem should be resolved. 2) Several degrees of kinship and relationships that cannot be represented otherwise. In some cases, a placeholder person has to be displayed (e.g. in the case of cousin marriages, multiple marriages or incorrect connections). Showing the relatives of this placeholder can make it easier to understand why the tree contains a “ghost person”, but it adds duplicate people to the Interactive Tree. 3) FamilySearch – if FamilySearch is active, online entries and relationships are displayed on the Interactive Tree to show possible links. This can lead to confusion. If FS is responsible for this, you can test it by turning FamilySearch off.

You tried to launch your app and just received the error message, the app “XY is damaged and can’t be opened. Delete XY and download it again from the App Store”? This is unfortunately a Mac App Store issue which has been around since the App Store launched.

However, there is no need to worry, simply follow these simple steps. Your data won’t be harmed because app data on your Mac is never stored inside an application.

– Move the current application from the Applications folder to the trash and empty it
– Launch the Mac App Store
– Login with the account you used to buy the app
– Go to your profile
– Then view your purchase history and download your app again

In some cases, these steps are not sufficient because the Mac App Store faces two issues Apple is obviously not able to tackle. If a simple re-download still results in the error message, this is what to do:
