How can I download the free update from 8.0, 8.1 or 8.2 to 8.3?
For all customers who bought Version 8.0, 8.1 or 8.2, the update to Version 8.3 is completely free. Please open the Mac App Store on your Mac and check the Updates tab at the very top to download MacFamilyTree 8.3 for free. Be sure to use the same Apple ID / App Store account as with your original purchase.
If the update does not show up, please restart the Mac. It happens that the App Store hangs and fails to display pending updates.
My mother is also my cousin four times removed - and similar strange-sounding degrees of kinship
There will be times when one person in your tree is a relative in multiple ways – the direct line and some strange-sounding degree of kinship, that looks like an error. However, in most cases these kinships are both valid. If two cousins married a few generations ago, multiple relationships at the same time are the result. If you are absolutely sure that this cannot be the correct explanation, please check the family section in MacFamilyTree and look for empty or duplicate family entries. Delete entries you don’t want to keep and the multiple relationships should be gone. Hint: Deleting a family will not delete the family members, it just deletes the connections.
What are the demo version's limitations?
You cannot save, print, sync or export in MacFamilyTree’s demo version. Apart from that, all features including maps, charts, reports and import are available. Please not that it’s not possible to transfer data you entered in the demo version to the full version – even if you buy the full version while the demo version is still running. That’s unfortunately one Mac App Store limitation which forbids to convert a demo to a full version by purchasing it from the App Store. If you decide to buy MacFamilyTree from the Mac App Store, please delete the demo, it’s no longer required then.
My Mac does not support 10.10 Yosemite - how can I run MacFamilyTree anyway?
MacFamilyTree 8 makes heavy use of Apple’s latest technologies. These are usually just available in more recent versions of Apple’s operating system. Therefore, MacFamilyTree won’t run on OS X 10.9 Mavericks or older.
The only way to use MacFamilyTree is to download the older version 6 from our download section – and then to contact us. We can grant you access to version 6 until you have updated your Mac to OS X 10.10 or later.
How can I open my MacFamilyTree 7 tree in version 8?
MacFamilyTree 8 will automatically show all your trees in the start window. If you open one of these trees, MacFamilyTree converts it to the new version 8 file format. In case you cannot find you trees in MacFamilyTree 8’s start window, please open the old MacFamilyTree version again and export your tree to your hard drive (file menu, export as MacFamilyTree file). If you open this file with version 8, all your data is available and you can enjoy all of MacFamilyTree 8’s new features.
I bought MacFamilyTree 8 - why do I have to purchase MobileFamilyTree 8, too?
MacFamilyTree and MobileFamilyTree are two separate apps. While they work perfectly as a team, both apps are able to function without the iOS or Mac companion. If you use a Mac but no iPhone/iPad, you don’t require MobileFamilyTree. If you just want to pursue you family research on iPhone or iPad, you don’t require MacFamilyTree.
iOS apps always have to be purchased separately and Apple offers no way to buy a Mac and iOS app bundle at the same time. This is way you have to buy MobileFamilyTree separately. If you opt for MobileFamilyTree 8, you get a version that works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch – one purchase, three platforms.
How can I import a family tree created with a different app?
Every modern genealogy app offers GEDCOM import and export. GEDCOM is a universal genealogical file format which allows you to exchange your data easily. If you want to import a tree created with a different app, export it as a GEDCOM file then import that file with MacFamilyTree.
Does CloudTree work in iOS 9 or OS X 10.11 El Capitan?
No, CloudTree requires iOS 10, iOS 11, macOS 10.12 Sierra or macOS 10.13 High Sierra to work. If you’re synchronizing your devices using CloudTree, all Macs, iPhones and iPads must either run iOS 10, iOS 11, macOS 10.12 Sierra or macOS 10.13 High Sierra in order to download and upload trees to CloudTree.
Is there telephone support?
We do not offer telephone support since we are convinced that we can help you way better by sending screenshots or written instructions you can read again if necessary. Especially when it comes to very specific questions or technical issues, our support team has to consult the application’s developer. As you can imagine, our developers are not always available for answering questions like these. As soon as our support staff has the information you require, they will contact you instantly by email.

If you cannot remember your password, please open MacFamilyTree, then navigate to the publish section. Select Export Website for MacFamilyTree.com, click in log in, then click on “forgot password”.
What is the best way to print a huge chart in MacFamilyTree?
There are basically two options available if you want to print out a huge chart. Option 1: Export your chart as PDF, then take that file to a copy shop and ask them to print it on a plotter. Option 2: Select your chart, click on edit in the bottom bar, then click on “distribute on multiple pages”. If you print these pages and glue them together, you can create wall charts, too.

Dropbox sync between MacFamilyTree and MobileFamilyTree - possible?
No, unfortunately iCloud sync is the only way to sync your trees between Mac and iPhone. If you don’t use MobileFamilyTree for iPhone/iPad and just want to sync two Macs, you can use Dropbox, though. Please open MacFamilyTree’s preferences, go to “database”, then change the database location to your dropbox folder. Please consider these important warnings:
- Dropbox can’t resolve sync conflicts – meaning if you change your database on two Macs simultaneously, your changes are lost.
- Be sure to create backups of your family trees
- Should you decide to activate iCloud sync again, your tree file will be removed from Dropbox and stored in the location Apple requires for iCloud sync.
