I just tried MacFamilyTree 6 with my old MacFamilyTree 5 family tree database. However, back in MacFamilyTree 5, I can't open it anymore. It says the file was created with a newer version.

With every new version of MacFamilyTree, the database is converted to be up to date with possible changes. When you open your MacFamilyTree 5 database in MacFamilyTree 6, even in the demo, the file is converted to be readable by MacFamilyTree 6. We know not everybody wants to upgrade right away so a backup copy of your previous database is stored in the folder "Database Migration Backups".

Since Mac OS 10.7 the Library folder is not displayed in the Finder anymore. To navigate to the Database Migration Backups folder please follow these steps:

  • Open the Finder.
  • Go to the Menu Bar and open the "Go" menu.
  • Select the entry: "Go to Folder..."
  • Enter the path of the Application Support folder. (We recommend to copy the path for your MacFamilyTree and Mac OS X version below with CMD + C and paste it into the input field with CMD + V.)

In MacFamilyTree 6.3 running on Mac OS X 10.6:

~/Library/Application Support/MacFamilyTree/Database Migration Backups

In MacFamilyTree 6.3 running on Mac OS X 10.7 or higher:

~/Library/Containers/com.synium.macfamilytree/Data/Library/Application Support/MacFamilyTree/Database Migration Backups

In a previous version of MacFamilyTree

~/Library/Application Support/MacFamilyTree/Database Migration Backups

More general information is available in the User Guide. You can find it in MacFamilyTree's Help Menu or for download here.
